About the event
The WNC African American History Bus Tour includes five sites important to African American life in Western North Carolina. Join the tour across three counties to learn more about Appalachian and American History. Participants will start at Liberty Baptist Church in Sylva. Author, artist, and speaker, will lead the tour, sharing historical and cultural information. The describes the stops.
The tour is a fundraiser for the NAACP Leroy Jackson Memorial Scholarship given to high school seniors for their first year of college. Leroy Jackson (1948-2017) was a native of Jackson County who as a child had to attend all-black segregated schools. As an accomplished athlete, he Integrated the county’s Little League and was one of the few African American students who integrated the county’s high school (1960s). Jackson was a US Army veteran (Vietnam War), a Deacon at Liberty Baptist Church, the director for the Asheville Parks and Recreation, and a founding member of this Branch of the NAACP. The scholarship honors the contributions of Mr. Jackson in promoting an equitable and inclusive society through the spirit of service.
